It’s 2010. Digital technology has settled into the photographic industry solidly and absolutely. Years ago it was apparent that there was no looking back. So what has been the effect on wedding photography and other events? It’s striking! The versatility of product, the customization of layouts, the gorgeous special effects…and the idea that “anyone with a camera can take a good picture.”

Over the last few years, especially with the economic downturn most recently, there has been a trend of brides and grooms skimping on the photography. After all, people with cameras are a “dime a dozen.” With new photographers offering services for just a few hundred dollars, it must seem ridiculous to spend thousands. I get it.

When you are planning an event consider these points: Can a few hundred dollars buy a seasoned professional who comes with and artistic eye, technical expertise, proper accessory lighting and full insurance coverage? What about their people skills on this highly emotional day? Does the photographer understand the flow of the day and the importance of each part and each relationship? Is there any final product or are you left with a plastic disc that requires equipment and software to view? Will that technology be accessible to the next generation, and the next after that?

I’m predicting that the pendulum of the trend of cheap coverage and disappointing results will swing back. If there is one thing to invest in, it’s the one thing that you will have and hold long after that precious day and will pass on for future generations. Will your future grandchild want a screensaver of her grandparents wedding day, or quality photographs, bound in a hand-crafted album that tells a sentimental family story and protects them for generations to come.
